A Measure of Time

Ed Whiteman

Exploration is at the core of Edward Whiteman’s creative process. Drawing on ideas and motifs from the environment and from objects both natural and man-made which are modified by time, weather and use, the artist constructs paintings from paper and canvas, fusing elements into commanding primal images. Materials and texture and muted color images integrated in the ground are the cornerstone of his work. Whiteman achieves his unique surfaces by manipulating the material in every manner possible, soaking, crumbling, and embedding the paper with color until a complete new object is born. His irregularly shaped wall pieces unite simple yet powerful forms with seductive color. In his creations the paper does not function as a surface for the work but actually becomes the work itself.
