In the spring of 1980, sculptor Jesús Bautista Moroles was trekking up a mountainside in Italy when he found his artistic way. Under his feet lay a footpath, a carpet of grass dotted with marble steps. The steps bore a worn patina, polished by centuries of feet padding over the stone, often by men bound for work in the quarries.
Jesús Moroles, a renowned Texas sculptor who had shown his work in solo exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Latino Cultural Center, died Monday night in a car wreck on Interstate 35 near Jarrell, Texas, 15 miles north of Georgetown, his associate confirmed Tuesday. He was 64.
[Arthur Roger’s] donation — paintings, sculpture and photography by local and national luminaries of modern art — comprises a new NOMA exhibit, “Pride of Place: The Making of Contemporary Art in New Orleans.” The exhibit opens Friday and runs through Sept. 3. In the exhibit’s 143-page catalog, museum Director Susan M. Taylor describes the gift as “transformational.” It “significantly expands” NOMA’s contemporary art holdings and “reaffirms the museum’s commitment to the work of local New Orleans artists,” she said.
The legacy of world-renowned sculptor Jesús Moroles lives on in Vail following his untimely death in a car accident earlier this year. Moroles’ “Granite Landscape” in Vail’s Ford Park has become a favorite in the town’s public art collection. The installation has served as an intimate gathering place for Bravo! Pre-concert talks, Vail Performing Arts Academy performances, yoga classes and even weddings. The public has embraced and become stewards of the art, which was something dear to the artist.
A prominent Gulf Coast artist died this month. Jesus Moroles had a collection of honors, including the National Medal of the Arts, the Texas State Artist Award and was known for producing works for several major museums and memorials, including his largest work: the Houston Police Memorial sculpture in Buffalo Bayou Park.
Artists and fans from all over the country are in mourning after news broke of the death of renowned sculptor and Texas native Jesús Moroles.
Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art presents the rich and varied contributions of Latino artists in the United States since the mid-twentieth century, when the concept of a collective Latino identity began to emerge. The exhibition is drawn entirely from the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s pioneering collection of Latino art. It explores how Latino artists shaped the artistic movements of their day and recalibrated key themes in American art and culture.

The internationally esteemed sculptor, Jesus Moroles, although brought up in Dallas lives and works in Rockport, Texas, that is when he’s not on his way to Shanghai to finalize designs for a sculpture, lighting and landscaping commission or to Santa Fe for a one-person celebratory 200-year anniversary exhibition (2010) at the Mexican Embassy.
A few years back while exploring place-making with intersections between art and landscape architecture, I experienced a deeper understanding of sculpture through the art of Jesús Moroles. His remarkable ability to combine art and spirit of environment captured my attention and illustrated an ever-prevailing interest about the forces that bind nature and human beings.
Jesús Moroles is internationally renowned as one of the greatest sculptors working with granite today. Through a process called ‘tearing’ Moroles transforms each block of hard stone into a delicately refined expression of the interaction between man and nature.
