The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia St, from August 3–September 7, 2024. The gallery will host an opening on Saturday, August 3, from 6–9 PM, in conjunction with White Linen Night.
Lasting Impressions, Edward Whiteman’s fourteenth solo exhibition with the Arthur Roger Gallery, features his renowned large-scale paintings, executed on reconstructed paper. The wall pieces range up to 6 feet in size, and are richly embedded with emblems of an almost primal legibility.
The artist’s preference to work in paper grew out of a desire, in his words, “to become part of the surface and to give it a personal history before committing myself to an image.” As such, Whiteman’s maintains the vitality of his work by tempering his dedication to meticulous technique with an openness to serendipitous discovery. In the creation of his “reconstructed” works, Whiteman employs a variety of methods to achieve an exquisitely textured surface that is equally as essential to the work as the allusive motifs it supports. Largely drawn from a recent body of work entitled Quilted Snapshots, this exhibition demonstrates Whiteman’s long-standing capacity for anchoring the abstract in a sturdy humanity.
Whiteman is originally from upstate New York. In 1959, he received his undergraduate degree from the Albright Art School at the University of Buffalo. After a period of residence in New York and in England, he relocated to New Orleans, where he was included in the 1975 Biennial at the New Orleans Museum of Art, as well as the 1975 Whitney Biennial. Whiteman was the recipient of a Ford Foundation Grant in 1980, and received a major grant from the Penny McCall Foundation in 1990. At this time, Whiteman moved his studio from New Orleans to Covington, where he continues to work today. Whiteman’s work is featured in the collections of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the State of Louisiana, and the Virlane Foundation.
