The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present Topsy Turvy World: New Paintings and Drawings, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by John Alexander. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia Street, from May 4 – July 6, 2024. The gallery will host an opening reception on Saturday, May 4 from 6-8 pm.
John Alexander’s upcoming exhibition showcases over 50 years of artistic evolution that transcends the typical landscape genre—infusing flora and fauna with a sense of uncertainty and foreboding stemming from human impact on the environment.
John Alexander’s seventh exhibition with the gallery is characterized by duskily hued canvases, punctuated with the vibrance of a parrot’s plumage, twilit peaches, albino ravens. The resulting effect is an invitation to ponder the precarious balance struck by humanity and nature—a throughline further elaborated by the shrewd humor and personalism of his works on paper.
Born in Beaumont, TX, Alexander’s connection to the natural world was shaped by his childhood explorations of the Gulf Coast’s bayous and marshlands and has continued to be an inspirational touchstone throughout his three-decade tenure in New York City.
After completing an MFA in 1970 at Southern Methodist University, Alexander moved to Houston and became a member of the art faculty at the University of Houston. In the late ‘70’s, Alexander left Texas for New York—first SoHo, and later Amagansett, on the south shore of Long Island, where he settled in an 18th century farmhouse on three acres of land by the coast.
In late 2007, Alexander had a major retrospective of his work, first shown at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., which traveled to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2012, One World, Two Artists: John Alexander and Walter Anderson was exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, LA. His work is also included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; both the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans.
