The Arthur Roger Gallery is presenting “Still Life,” an exhibition of new color still life photographs by David Halliday. The exhibition will be open between Saturday, May 3 and May 28th.
Working in the traditional genre of still-life photography David Halliday first gained renown for his sepia-toned silver prints. His latest body of color work maintains the same intimate and simple beauty but also creates a more visceral connection for the viewer. The rich colors and sensual textures seem embodied by the scents and nature of the items he selects.
The photographs in this exhibition were shot in New Orleans, where David Halliday lives, Italy, Greece and other locations. His work is characterized by attention to detail and to composition. Like a painter, David Halliday emphasizes volumes, balances, texture and areas of subtle shading.
Born in Glen Cove, New York in 1958, David Halliday moved to New Orleans to take a job as a chef at The Bistro at the Maison de Ville, He abandoned working as a chef but often his work relates to the epicurean world. He received his degree in photography from Syracuse University and pursued further studies under the tutelage of Arnold Newman. David Halliday has been photographing for nearly two decades. He has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. In 2002 there was a retrospective of his work at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. David Halliday’s work is included in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
