The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present Quotidian Life, an exhibition of photography by David Halliday. The exhibition will be on view at the Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia Street, from May 1–June 19, 2021.

 

David Halliday’s photographic series, Quotidian Life, is inspired by the mundanity of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. His series of still-life photographs allude to normal life with a stack of paper on a table nodding to the junk mail that accumulates. The stack of fabric on a chair reminds the viewer of the laundry undone in the bedroom.

 

David Halliday uses the ordinary of everyday life to highlight the beauty of life. On the opposite wall of the gallery is a group of photographs that were captured over 10 years in Greece. The vivid colors and Mykonos are well represented in the multi-part photographs.

 

Halliday has been known to combine multiple photographs to create a piece but the

artist evolves the process in Quotidian Life. The artist combines two photographs and two frames to create a 3-dimensional composition. He juxtaposes a cluster of bougainvillea atop impossibly small tree branches that seem to serve as spindly legs dancing among spent

shotgun shells. Halliday, a chef in a previous incarnation, artfully arranges a group of fish atop a vivid blue table creating movement and beauty with the fresh catch.

 

David Halliday has been photographing for over two decades. Born in Glen Cove, New York in 1958, he attended Syracuse University and pursued further studies under the tutelage of Arnold Newman. He has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout the

United States and Europe. In 2002, the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans exhibited a retrospective of his work and recently he exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans. Halliday’s work is included in numerous public and private collections

including the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the New Britain Museum of Art.
