The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present Echos of Hue and Song, an exhibition of recent works by Francis X. Pavy. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger@434, located at 434 Julia St, from February 1 – April 12, 2025. The gallery will host an opening with the artist in attendance on Saturday, February 1, from 6–8 PM.
Echos of Hue and Song, artist Francis X. Pavy’s fourteenth solo exhibition at the Arthur Roger Gallery, embodies a sea-change in his artistic voyage, one that draws upon the practice of revisiting, reclaiming, and expanding upon forgotten or dormant ideas. Among Louisiana’s most recognizable artists, Pavy’s work pulses with color and musicality, grounding abstraction in distinctly Southern narratives of the natural world and its inherent mysticism. Night-blooming flowers, the iridescence of oil on water, and Zydeco silhouettes feature prominently in this selection of work. Pavy’s expert use of contrast and rhythmic motif confirm his strength as a painter, while his efforts to capture the light of a fleeting moment harken back to a childhood love of photography. The resulting canvases serve as a celebration of continuity and transformation.
A lifelong resident of Louisiana, Francis X. Pavy was born in Lafayette in 1954. As a child, Francis studied art under the direction of Elemore Morgan Jr, and became an avid photographer. Later, Pavy attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where he studied music, ceramics, animation, painting, printmaking and sculpture, graduating in 1976. In 1977, Pavy started working in a glass shop, making leaded and beveled glass windows, and eventually opening his own glass studio. Over time, however, painting became his major focus. Pavy’s work has been well-received regionally, nationally, and internationally, with one-man exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Aspen, and New Orleans as well as France and Switzerland. Pavy has also participated in many notable group shows such as Outward Bound: American Art on the Brink of the 21st Century (traveling from the United States to Indonesia and the Middle East), Elvis And Marilyn: 2 Times Immortal (traveling from the United States to Japan), Southern Narrative Painting (Southeast U.S.) and Invites: Peintres Louisianais (Paris, France). Pavy’s work has been published in a variety of catalogs, books, and magazine articles, including his most recent publication, Francis Pavy: Forty Years, which showcases four decades of vibrant work, blending contemporary perspectives with deep-rooted local traditions of French Louisiana.
