“Louis,” the first series of stunningly executed woodcuts, is in homage to the life and work of the incomparable Louis Armstrong. John Scott wishes “to pay tribute to Louis Armstrong for all he brought to the human banquet table.”
John Scott’s second series of large-scale woodcuts, “Blues Poem for an Urban Landscape,” is derived from the artist’s poignant experience of traveling for many years through American inner cities and looking upon abandoned homes and cars. The woodcuts in the “Blues Poem” series portray a landscape filled with figuration but they too can be simultaneously viewed as complete abstraction.
