Drawing on ideas and motifs from the environment and employing objects both natural and man made which are modified by time, weather and use, Whiteman constructs paintings from paper and canvas. He achieves his singular surfaces by manipulating the material in every manner possible, soaking, crumbling and embedding the paper with color until a complete new object is born. His irregularly shaped nonobjective paper wall pieces unite simple yet powerful forms with seductive color. The exhibit will also include large female figure drawings executed with incised graphite lines which become an integral part of the paper.
