Using a flatbed scanner as a camera, Katherine Blacklock choreographs tableaus reminiscent of Dutch Vanitas paintings, and nightscapes recalling Japanese screen paintings. The artist describes the work as existing in an ambiguous space, not subject to laws of gravity. Each, one symbolic and narrative and the other lyrical and illusive, are linked by an awareness of the transience of life.
