More interactive work is found in Lin Emery’s kinetic sculptures at Arthur Roger Gallery. Emery, a local sculptor whose work is widely known in New Orleans and beyond, continues to be inspired by the exquisite forms that Nature offers every day.
Tucked behind the State Library of Louisiana on Third Street is Anthem, among the fine works that comprise the Louisiana State Art Collection. Made in 1983, the polished aluminum sculpture is one the first outdoor installations by New Orleans-based artist Lin Emery. Internationally recognized for her kinetic sculptures, Emery is inspired by forms found in nature.

Since the early 1960s in New Orleans, Emery has been making large-scale aluminum sculptures that are constructed to work with the wind: They sway, rotate and bend. The shapes are positioned to give the sense they are dancing.
Lin Emery’s suite of new works at Arthur Roger Gallery through April 25 confirms her position as New Orleans’ premier sculptor. For decades, Emery, who was born in 1928, has gifted us with gorgeous, glinting mechanical sculptures that are so exquisitely balanced that they bob and wave in ballet-like motion with every breeze.
Lin Emery’s kinetic sculptures epitomize that kind of timeless and finely tuned consistency. But like the timeless, pristine miracles of the natural world on which they are based, they can be easy to take for granted — unless something changes, as appears to be the case in her current show at Arthur Roger Gallery.

In the more than half-a-century span of her career, Lin Emery has come to be recognized as one of America’s foremost kenetic sculpture artists. She has received world-wide commissions for some three dozen architectural-scale polished aluminum sculptures, each inspired by the forms and forces of nature. In 2012, Hudson Hills Press published a coffee-table tome detailing more than sixty years of work. It’s a beautiful book, heavy and dense with glossy photographs, one that attempts to encapsulate a lifetime of dedicated labor.
For twenty-five years, Lin Emery’s Wave, 1988 has welcomed visitors to the New Orleans Museum of Art from the lily pond in front of the main entrance. The sleek, multi-faceted sculpture that sprung from the water is composed of seven interconnected arms, which seem to simultaneously move independently and collectively. Not only striking, the work is a study of mathematics and engineering. This fall, NOMA has moved Wave into the Cascade Garden Pool in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, which allows Emery’s signature touch of movement to be visible from both the Pine and Oak Groves.
Lin Emery (Hudson Hills Press, 2012) is, at one level, the coffee table book which every artist covets as the pinnacle of his or her career. The young artist-in-training will drool over its glossy dust-jacket, its gray cloth covers with “Lin Emery” embossed upon the front in silver (this in anticipation of generations of library shelf wear), its russet end papers, and its one-hundred and twenty-two color plates.
