Stephanie Patton is a multimedia artist whose work comprises sculpture, painting, photography, video and performance. Humor plays an important role in her work and is often used as a device to bring attention to more critical issues and transform her personal experiences into something universal.
Private Practice embodies the issues and elements that remain constant in her work: an exploration of mental and physical health and themes of healing, comfort and self-preservation. The large-scale, padded white vinyl pieces in the exhibition allude to various emotional states. The works are an invitation to lure the viewers into their own state of self-awareness. The artist finds that creating humorous objects often breaks down barriers and allows for the beginning of an open and genuine dialog between her art, the audience and herself. Other multimedia pieces in the exhibition deal with moving through and overcoming painful experiences as both children and adults.
