Anthology: The Gathering of Flowers is Jacqueline Bishop’s ninth exhibition with the Arthur Roger Gallery and features recent paintings, works on paper, and a collaboration with sculptor MaPo Kinnord. This body of work, created over the past 6 years, is distinguished by the artist’s use of a palette dominant in alizarin crimson–a pigment originally used in Egypt for textiles and murals dating back to 3000 BC. Bishop’s use of the hue symbolizes the methane seeping into our environment, which results in vivid, chemical-filled sunsets, and also references the color of roses, blood, and algae in the Gulf of Mexico.
The title of the series itself is an allusion to the origin of the word “anthology” which can be translated as “the gathering of flowers,” and reflects the artist’s conviction that the flora of our world is ensouled, and thus more powerful than the forces of destruction stemming from eco-political injustice. Bishop’s “world landscapes” weave metaphor, intimacy, and agency into the genre of the narrative landscape as a means of addressing environmental realities in Louisiana and beyond.
Jacqueline Bishop received her B.A from the University of New Orleans and an M.F.A from Tulane University, where she has also taught a course on Art and the Environment as an adjunct. She is the author of Chico Mendes: Em Memoria: A Tribute on the 10-Year Anniversary of His Death (Lavender Ink, 1998); a collection of 10 years of paintings and testimonials about the Brazilian rubber tapper slain by wealthy cattle ranchers. She has exhibited and lectured throughout the Americas, Asia, and Europe, and her work can be found in the permanent collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, among many other public and private collections. Bishop has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2007), as well as Joan Mitchell and Warhol Foundation grants (2006). Her work is included in A Unique Slant of Light: The Bicentennial History of Art in Louisiana (University Press of Mississippi, 2012). The artist currently lives and works in New Orleans and Columbia, Mississippi.
