Al Souza culls vignettes of images from assembled puzzle parts, sometimes a color; other times a motif or figure and builds these fragments into extravagant compositions. The works are enlivened by cleverly dissonant juxtapositions and are punctuated by subtleties of color and space. The artist has a remarkable ability for balancing order and chaos and for infusing his paintings with an irrepressible wit that emanates from the work. The “paintings'” singular interminglings evoke Surrealism and appropriation, Abstract Expressionism and Pop.
