In the works included in this exhibition Radcliffe Bailey creates dense pictorial fields that function like biographical maps to the historic past. Working in an improvisational manner orchestrating and integrating veiled and obvious meanings, the artist incorporates elements of collage and text into his mixed media paintings.
The “ecology” of Bailey’s work may include symbolic elements such as water from New Orleans, Georgia clay, or a concealed piece of cotton. Each painting engages multiple levels of meaning as it probes the history of African-Americans.
