Artist Statement
Introducing fiber art into my studio practice has opened a direct path to the major influences that have been informing my work for many years.
Motifs and images from ancient textiles and indigenous folk art reimagined through these pieces connect directly to the source of inspiration. The research becomes an archaeological and devotional practice, and the sources offer decorative and aesthetic forms to explore in search of a deeper personal and universal expression.
My intention is one of innocence, admiration, and connection yet I often find darkness and pathos lying below the naivety and beauty.
These new pieces were created by hand tufting recycled cotton yarns with additional embellishments and other materials such as vintage military patches, fringe, and rope.
