Provenance

"Sunday Morning" by photographer Deborah Luster is an enchanting photographic composition that captures the essence of a serene and timeless moment. The photograph was born from a serendipitous encounter during Deborah's journey through rural Arkansas on a peaceful Sunday morning. As she traversed the countryside, her camera by her side, she chanced upon a charming country church nestled amidst a picturesque cotton field. Intrigued, Deborah parked her car and ventured inside, discreetly slipping into the back row of the church.

Amidst the congregation, her gaze was drawn to a captivating scene across the aisle—twin girls with one slumbering, her head nestled gently in her mother's lap. As the service drew to a close, Deborah approached the mother, captivated by the ethereal beauty of the moment, and respectfully requested to capture her daughter's portrait. The mother graciously consented, allowing Deborah to position the girl with her back turned towards the cotton field, adorned by the delicate veil of the sky.

What makes "Sunday Morning" truly remarkable is its ability to transcend the confines of time, evoking a sense of nostalgia that could easily belong to any period in the past century and a half. The photograph encapsulates a bygone era while simultaneously resonating with viewers today. Through the delicate interplay of composition, lighting, and subject matter, Deborah Luster masterfully immortalizes a fleeting instant, inviting us to contemplate the universal aspects of human experience and the enduring allure of the rural landscape.
