Douglas Bourgeois' Veil of Veronica features a portrait of Veronica Yvette Bennett, better known by her stage name Ronnie Spector. The legendary American vocalist, once the lead singer of the 1960s vocal girl group the Ronettes, had an infamous six-year marriage to producer Phil Spector, during which he imprisoned her in their home and was verbally abusive. In 2009, Phil Spector was convicted of shooting and killing actress Lana Clarkson. The painting, rife with symbolism, depicts Ronnie Spector standing behind a cloth with the image of a martyr’s face. This is in reference to the Christian account of when Saint Veronica encountered Jesus carrying the cross. Moved with pity, she offered him her veil so that he could wipe away the blood and sweat from his face. When Jesus returned the veil to her, the image of his face was imprinted on the cloth. This piece of cloth became known as the Veil of Veronica.
