Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with the Pearl Earring” is the artist’s most famous work and a great example of 17th century Dutch painting traditions. Vermeer’s depiction of his subject and the figure’s exotic wear (Oriental turban and excessively large pearl earring) made the work quite controversial in its day. Many still debate the exact nature of the young woman and the questions have inspired much critique and popular media over the centuries.

My FLY GIRL features a beautiful young sister in a satin scarf and bonnet, a style of fashion that has equally become controversial, almost as much as the trend of “saggin” amongst her male counterparts. Her brows and lashes impeccable, her gaze, fixed on the viewer is alluring and arresting. Dangling from her left ear is the iconic Jordan brand ‘Jumpman’ which alludes to ideas of hope, aspiration, and flight.

"FLY GIRL" compels us to consider society’s beauty standards and politics of respectability as they relate to and impact young Black women. Why are we so offended by bonnets and headscarves on Black women in public? Why do we so often assume that people who dress in oppositional styles are less worthy of respect… appreciation… ambition?
