Over the years in working with the language of writers Emily Dickinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Walt Whitman, I came to wonder when did they write? What was happening in the country when they wrote? And who were their forebears in voice and context? Walt Whitman once wrote “I will thread a thread through my poems that time and events are compact miracles”. I want to honor them, these poets, speakers, religious visionaries, and abolitionists.
