The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present “Altogether Elsewhere – Three Projects by John Pilson.” The exhibition will be on view in the Arthur Roger Gallery video exhibition space, located at 432 Julia Street, from August 4 – September 15, 2012. The gallery will host an opening reception with the artist in attendance, Saturday, August 4 from 6-9 pm in conjunction with “White Linen Night.”
“Altogether Elsewhere” brings together three projects which, in the artist’s words, “collectively represent my long-term interest in the blurred distinctions between social documentary, experimental narrative and the many ways in which visual art and spontaneous performance are woven in to daily experience.” This second exhibition of John Pilson’s work at the gallery consists of two video installations as well as a selection of photographs.
“Frolic and Detour” is a nine channel video installation originally commissioned by MoMA in conjunction with the series “9 Screens.” It explores everyday transitions and blurred distinctions through the experiences of its protagonist and his environments. “A Thousand Miles Away,” a single channel video installation, presents a series of interconnected portraits filmed in New Orleans in 2008. The work examines the “path between observation, storytelling, performances and labor.” Lastly, the exhibition includes selections from “Interregna,” a book of photographs documenting the artist’s time as a computer graphics operator on the graveyard shift at a 24/7 investment bank at the height of the dot-com bubble.
Born in 1968, John Pilson lives and works in New York. He received a B.A. in 1991 from Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied photography and philosophy, and an M.F.A. in photography in 1993 from Yale University. The artist has exhibited internationally including exhibitions at Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Venice Biennale. He has exhibited his work at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and mounted a solo exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Germany. Pilson has been an artist-in-residence at the Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center and the LMCC World Views Program. At the Venice Biennale in 2002 he was awarded one of four prizes given to artists in the International Exhibition. A grant from the Penny McCall Foundation made possible several of his projects, including St. Denis, which was shown in October 2003 at Nicole Klagsbrun (NYC). Pilson was appointed to the Yale faculty in 2001.
