The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present two of John Pilson’s latest video installations titled “Night of the Hunter” and “Idea for a Film.” The installation will be on view in the video room at 432 Julia Street from Saturday, August 6th to Saturday, September 12th. The gallery will host an opening reception on Saturday, August 6th from 6 to 9 pm in conjunction with “White Linen Night.”
Pilson’s film, video and photographic work humorously point to the unexpected while exploring social mores. His film, A Thousand Miles Away, was featured in the 2008 Prospect.1 New Orleans Biennial and made on the spot in New Orleans. Viewers sat in pews in the chapel of the Gaskin-Southall Mortuary, while watching Pilson’s 15’, 11” video projection which presented eight vignettes shot in a semi-documentary style and merged into a seamless portrait of New Orleans.
Born in 1968, Pilson lives and works in New York. Pilson received a B.A. in 1991 from Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied photography and philosophy, and an M.F.A. in photography in 1993 from Yale University. The artist has exhibited internationally including exhibitions at Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Venice Biennale. He has exhibited his work at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and at the Museum of Modern Art and mounted a solo exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Germany. Pilson has been an artist-in-residence at the Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center and the LMCC World Views Program. At the Venice Biennale in 2002 he was awarded one of four prizes given to artists in the International Exhibition. A grant from the Penny McCall Foundation made possible several of his projects, including St. Denis, which was shown in October 2003 at Nicole Klagsbrun (NYC). Pilson was appointed to the Yale faculty in 2001.
