The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present A Memory from the River Ouse, an exhibition of recent works by Linda Ridgway. The exhibition will be on view at the Arthur Gallery, located at 432 Julia St., from February 1–April 12, 2025. The gallery will host an opening on Saturday, February 1, from 6–8 PM.
Linda Ridgway is renowned for her lyrical works across a variety of mediums, often autobiographically inspired and rooted in a deep appreciation of literature. A Memory from the River Ouse is an extension of Ridgway’s most recent exhibition entitled The Library–a tribute to the poetry and prose that has influenced the artist’s visual lexicon, as well as to the library space itself, which she considers to have been her first creative studio.
This particular facet of Ridgway’s project takes its name from the river in Sussex along which the writer Virginia Woolf lived and died, and features prime examples of Ridgway’s work in sculpture, printmaking, and a recent mode of assemblage the artist refers to as “tabletops.” Ridgway’s approach evidences a remarkable talent for capturing life in both mystery and memento; originally delicate materials such as textiles, plant matter, and the written word are imbued with a fortitude that does not diminish their intimacy, regardless of scale. The resulting works inspire reflection on themes of womanhood, memory, and nature, eschewing mere representation in favor of a visual poetry that responds to the legacies of post-minimalism.
Ridgway’s sculptures, prints, and drawings have been featured in more than thirty solo exhibitions, including a 20-year retrospective at the Dallas Museum of Art. Her work is featured in the permanent collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, the El Paso Museum of Art, the Grace Museum in Abilene, TX, the Old Jail Art Center in Albany, TX, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among many other public and private collections.
