The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present Entangled, an exhibition of paintings by Brian Guidry. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia Street, from October 7 – October 28, 2017. The gallery will host an opening reception with the artist in attendance on Saturday, October 7 from 6-9pm, in conjunction with Art for Arts’ Sake.
Entangled is Brian Guidry’s first exhibition with the gallery and features three large-scale paintings with reoccurring themes of technology and the manipulation of nature. Guidry synthesizes color, sound and texture to create “digitized” or “dissolved landscapes,” which range visually from compressed lines of color to abstract eruptions. He describes a few of the natural references found within his work as “the optical and aural effects of purling water, the cross section of sediment and the droning oscillations of summer cicadas.”
Guidry uses a specific color palette sampled from a variety of natural sources, such as reflections in water, storm clouds, sugar cane, and foliage. Rigorously matched colors are blended on-site before being produced in larger quantities in the studio. The injection of these “natural” colors into geometric planes and constructions creates shapes and voids suggestive of portals or slips in time, leading the viewer over the precipice of the normal, into the magical realism of the uncanny, peculiar and quantum.
Brian Guidry was born in New Iberia, LA in 1968. He received his B.F.A. from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and his M.F.A. in Painting from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Most recently his painting Absolute Zero – Lee Circle was acquired for the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art and was featured in the exhibition, NEW at NOMA: Recent Acquisitions in Modern and Contemporary Art. Other selected exhibitions include The Bronx Museum, NY; Gana Art Space, Seoul, Korea; the Odgen Museum of Southern Art, and the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans, LA; and the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan. Guidry’s work has been featured and discussed in Time Out Chicago, ArtForum, The Times-Picayune, Gambit Weekly, Pelican Bomb, The New York Times, and New American Paintings.
