“Pride of Place: The Making of Contemporary Art in New Orleans” an exhibition of works is on view at New Orleans Museum of Art.
The exhibition is a narrative about space, identity, and a sense of belonging in New Orleans’ contemporary art scene over the course of the last four decades. The selection of works on display showcases renowned art collector and gallery owner Arthur Roger’s entire personal art collection which he has gifted to the Museum. The collection includes more than 80 paintings, photographs, and sculptures and reflects Roger’s gallery’s 40-year history as well as his skill as an art collector. Roger’s remarkable collection offers an unparalleled glimpse into the history of New Orleans’ evolving art scene, representing a contemporary art collection still in formation as New Orleans continues to gain recognition as an art capital. Artists featured are Luis Cruz Azaceta, Willie Birch, Douglas Bourgeois, Robert Colescott, and Deborah Kass among others.
Arthur Roger is the founder of the Arthur Roger Gallery which he established in 1978. As interest grew in uptown galleries, he played a leading role in forming the New Orleans Gallery Association and in arranging the remarkably successful coordinated exhibition openings which would transform the art scene in New Orleans. In the fall of 2006, Arthur Roger curated the award-winning exhibition “Katrina: Catastrophe and Catharsis” which opened at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.
The exhibition that started on June 23 will run through September 3, 2017, at the New Orleans Museum of Art, 1 Collins Diboll Cir, New Orleans, LA 70124, US.
