The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present Prayer-Beads-Cells in the Age of Terrorism, an exhibition of mixed media work by Luis Cruz Azaceta. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia Street, from December 1 – December 29, 2001. The gallery will host an opening reception, with the artist in attendance, on Saturday, December 1 from 6-8 pm.

The artist’s personal reading of his current work is profoundly influenced by the traumatic events of September 11th. The entire gallery will be devoted to Azaceta’s paintings on canvas, works on paper, and chromogenic prints on wood.

Luis Cruz Azaceta immigrated to New York from Cuba in 1960 and until 1992 he lived in that city where his son and other close family members still reside. For several years Luis Cruz Azaceta has addressed apocalyptic issues in his work. Violence, displacement and tragedy are ongoing themes and concerns of the artist. Circles, zeroes, dots, points, beads — all elements in the current work — have taken on new meaning for the artist at a point in time preoccupied with micro-organisms, nanobacteria and viruses.

Born in Havana, Luis Cruz Azaceta attended the School of Visual arts in New York City after his immigration. He has resided in New Orleans since 1992.
