In “Trinket” Mitchell Gaudet pairs found objects and glass castings, which embellish and further define the found objects. The found objects and glass castings are displayed on rusted steel backgrounds that homogenize the two different objects and the dissimilar materials. The rusted steel also provides an overall patina to the intriguing work.

Born in New Orleans in 1962, Gaudet currently resides and works in New Orleans. He received his MFA from Tulane University in 1990, and a BFA from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, 1984. For the past ten years he has been associated with the distinguished Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA, where in 1994 he was honored as Emerging Artist in Residence. Gaudet has also taught at Penland School of Crafts, Penland, NC, Pratt Fine Arts Center, Seattle, WA, Urban School of Glass, Brooklyn, NY, and Bild-Werk Frauenau, Germany.

Gaudet is a founder of, and currently owns and operates New Orleans’ Studio Inferno, an independent glass art and production facility. Gaudet was also a founder and instructor of the New Orleans School of Glassworks. He served as co-chair for the 2004 Glass Arts Society Conference in New Orleans. Gaudet has achieved wide spread recognition for his sculpture in glass. His work is exhibited both nationally and internationally, and has been included in many distinguished public and private collections.
