The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent work by Troy Dugas. The exhibition will be on view from March 12th – April 16th, 2011 at Arthur Roger@434, located at 434 Julia Street. The gallery will host an opening reception to meet the artist on Saturday, March 12th, from 6 to 8 pm.

Using vintage and well-known consumer product labels, Troy Dugas assembles intricately designed, geometric constructions. The created patterns are in no way reminiscent of the original product; instead they have a memorizing effect of being something familiar.

In the past, Dugas has created the geometric patterns in a very formal and planned method, using the computer to generate an image of what the construction would eventually look like. Now he takes more liberties in the creation process. Dugas states, “Many of the decisions are made during the actual creation of the pieces. Still a very laborious task, I’m enjoying the uncertainty and the surprises that are happening. The work is more lyrical although retaining a clear structural form.”

Born in Rayne, Louisiana, Troy Dugas received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1994. In 1995, he moved to New York where he received a MFA from Pratt Institute. Since his return to Louisiana in 2002, Troy has exhibited at The Acadian Center for the Arts and The Paul and Lulu Hillard University Art Museum, both in Lafayette, LA; The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA; The Abercrombie Gallery at McNeese University, Lake Charles, LA; The Gueydan Museum in Gueydan, LA.

Dugas’ work has been recently included in “Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art Since the 60’s” by David Rubin published by MIT Press and will be included in the upcoming, southern edition of “New American Paintings” curated by Dan Cameron and published by the Open Studio Press. He is the 2009-2010 recipient of the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in New York and the 2007 recipient of a fellowship from the Louisiana Division of the Arts. He currently lives and works in Lafayette, LA creating intricate, optically woven abstractions from his collection of vintage labels.
