James Barsness is drawn to the world of fantastic imagery. His paintings explore the possibilities of multiple simultaneous narratives that can be quite complex. His intricate compositions are influenced by Breughel, Bosch, R.J. Crumb, Tibetan sacred painting and the artistic traditions of Thailand, India and Ireland.
Barsness seeks to illuminate the possibilities of every dimension of human behavior he can imagine. It is his desire that his work to be palatable to a lay viewer as well as to those who have a more sophisticated idea of possibilities in art making. Barsness possesses a mastery of draftsmanship that enables him to achieve a marvelous co-existence of imagery within the frame of his highly controlled paintings.
Paintings by Barsness have ben featured in solo exhibitions at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, GA, the Kohler Art Center Sheboygan, WI and the Boise Art Museum, ID. His work included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale School of Art Gallery and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art in Philadelphia.
Barsness has been the subject of two career monographs and more than 15 exhibition catalogues. He has also been the recipient of several awards including a Djerassi Foundation Resident Artist grant in 2011. The artist has also received grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the Elizabeth Foundation. James Barsness lives and works in Athens, Georgia .
