The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Amy Feldman. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger@434, located at 434 Julia Street, from March 5 – April 23, 2016. The gallery will host an opening reception on Saturday, March 5 from 6-8 pm.

Amy Feldman creates seemingly simple, large-scale gray abstractions notable for their visual impact and droll sense of humor. She explores how images and signs are perceived and distilled, and then draws attention to humanness in her work through its iconic language and subtle variation. She pivots the light-hearted against the monumental, seeking visual clarity and acute balance between immediacy and resonance. The visually straightforward images belie the subversion and critique lingering just beneath the surface.

Beginning with a swift, minimalist drawing in marker, she works quickly and efficiently to transcribe the gestural sketch in gray acrylic paint to an oversized gray or white canvas in a single session. Recently, she has reformulated her gray palette to exaggerate its relationship to the history of communication (calligraphy, clay, television, the computer screen) and is examining how both humor and introspection are activated within her paintings. David Rhodes describes, “The direct and playful surety of the images is a result of retaining a near duplication of formal elements while being willing to invent and accept the byproducts of a performative approach to painting.”

At the invitation of Jim Richard, Amy Feldman presents five large-scale, recent works on canvas. The works in the exhibition are part of an evolving language that is very much aware of the history of painting and the history of the artist’s own making.

Amy Feldman received her B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and M.F.A. from Rutgers University in 2008. She has exhibited nationally and abroad. She was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2013 and is a recipient of the Marie Walsh Sharpe Fellowship and The Robert Motherwell Fellowship. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
