Jim Richard’s oil paintings executed with uncommon elegance and subtlety are in the long artistic tradition of the rendering of domestic interiors. The artist’s treatment imbues his period rooms with social ironies. Richard’s interiors provide a melancholy yet trenchant social parody through the imposition of startlingly modernist sculpture into beautiful yet disturbing settings. In several of these recent paintings there is a new emphasis on exaggerated swatches of decorative motifs. This emphasis opens the pictures to a slightly more abstract point of view and allows for a more free mix of styles and aesthetics. Jim Richard’s unique private universe is occupied by its own recognizable mixture of penetrating imagination and rigorous law and order, all in the service of satirizing an American truth.
