From August 5th through August 26th the Arthur Roger Gallery will present a large collection of Robert Gordy paintings from his estate, which were completed prior to 1982.
In 1986 Robert Gordy’s unfortunate death from AIDS at the age of 52 was an enormous loss. The paintings in this exhibition clearly evidence the magnitude of Robert Gordy’s compositional skill and marvelously imaginative intelligence. The elegant paintings done in his signature style through 1981 evidence a mastery particularly over hue and value of color and keeping dynamics of shape in varied balance.
Robert Gordy’s paintings from the period before 1982 are, however, about more than mastery of color and design. Even in his austere period there are often intense emotional realities beneath the paintings’ apparent calm. The emotional message in Robert Gordy’s painting would surface fully in his final monotypes.
A catalog will accompany the exhibition.
