The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present All the Way Home, an exhibition of paintings by Jim Richard. At the artist’s invitation, the gallery is also exhibiting work by Tom Burckhardt and John Ahearn. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia Street, from January 4 through February 22, 2020. The gallery will host an opening reception with the artist in attendance on Saturday, January 4 from 6–8 pm.
All the Way Home is Jim Richard’s tenth exhibition with the gallery. Featured are small- to large-scale works rendered in Flashé on canvas, linen, and Yupo paper. The works, created over the last few years, continue the artist’s remarkable series of paintings that depict high style domestic interiors flecked with period furniture, kitsch objects, and works of art usually with a modernist flavor. Also included are paintings that depict gardens or backyards that are inhabited with (and interrupted by) references to modern art with the paint either applied by brush or a new poured technique.
In 2016 Richard started a series of works using Flashé paint poured onto Yupo paper. This offers a sense of immediacy and loss of control that is not so present in his signature style of carefully layered flat surfaces done with a brush. The poured vinyl paint, when dried on the surface of the non-absorbant Yupo, takes on a playful look that somewhat resembles playdough. He is now using this method to do works on stretched linen as well as the Yupo.
