Jammin’ on Julia, the annual spring street party in the New Orleans Arts District takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday (April 5). Look for a dozen exhibitions of regional and national artworks augmented by live music in many galleries along Julia Street and nearby. As always, the wide selection of art will hold something to satisfy most taste.

On the river end of the gallery stroll, look for luxurious floral still-lifes painted on copper sheet by Ben Shamback in an exhibit titled “Color is a Vessel” at LeMieux Galleries, 332 Julia St. The death of traditional painting has been greatly exaggerated.

Just steps away at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, 400A Julia St., you’ll find a fascinating exhibit of finely crafted conceptual sculpture by national art star Mel Chin, whose exhibit “Rematch” is now on display at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Arthur Roger Gallery, 434 Julia St., hosts an exhibit of New Orleans’ favorite cartoonist and cultural satirist Bunny Matthews, who is displaying an alphabet of Crescent City characters including “Astrologer, Drunk, Oyster Shucker and Xenophobe.” This should be a gas.

Jammin’ on Julia will take place this year without the Camp Street stalwart d.o.c.s. gallery, which has closed.
