SUMMARY:Art in the Time of Empathy
DESCRIPTION:The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present Art in the Time of Empathy\, an exhibition of gallery and invited artists examining the year 2020 as a unique historical moment and a transformative time. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery\, located at 432 Julia Street\, from October 3 until December 19. The exhibition will open on October 3rd in conjunction with Art Beyond Arts’ Sake.  \nArt in the Time of Empathy is the largest exhibition in the gallery’s history\, featuring over 70 invited and represented artists. Playing off the iconic title of Gabriel García Márquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera\, artists address the many aspects of quarantine\, politics\, social justice\, science\, and community in a time where physical distance has redefined these dialogues. A time capsule for our period\, Art in the Time of Empathy is an exploration of the human side of this moment\, an opportunity for a community to pause and reflect on the many perspectives of a shared experience.  \nThe exhibition features artists who used this time of sheltering in place to re-examine their studio practice and to contemplate themes of separation\, normalcy\, politics\, social justice\, and a return to nature and to self. Demond Melancon confronts the devastation of COVID-19 and the price paid by frontline workers. Frahn Koerner\, David Halliday\, Jacqueline Bishop address the physical separation of social distancing and the complex emotions that follow. John Alexander and Ted Kincaid unpack the shocking\, divisive\, and hateful state of American politics. The renewed force of the Black Lives Matter movement demanded action from many artists. Whitfield Lovell\, George Dureau\, and Leonard Galmon present striking portraits of Black Americans\, celebrating Black bodies that historically have been excluded or appropriated in Western art\, while Douglas Bourgeois’ “Mistaken Identity” addresses the extreme police violence against Black people. \nSome artists approach these complex issues with humor. Richard Baker’s series of bread-making cookbooks and still life paintings by David Bates and Amy Weiskopf consider the experience of quarantine and its associated activities. Douglas Bourgeois creates a fictional graduation yearbook\, recalling memories and experiences sorely missed amidst strict new school protocols. Joseph Havel’s stack of translucent books and Jim Richard’s backyard scenes recall the solitude of open time. James Drake’s “You Owe Me Money” evokes the economic downfall\, devastating unemployment\, and financial difficulties of the pandemic.  \nOther artists focus on our community\, its struggles\, triumphs\, and resilience. John Hartman’s portrait of Doreen Ketchens recalls a time when music and people filled the French Quarter\, now uncomfortably quiet. Deborah Luster\, An-My Lê\, Meg Turner\, and Robert Polidori present piercing photographs of the people and urban landscape of Louisiana. Robert Colescott and Robert Gordy remind us of past traumas and lessons learned in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of the AIDS crisis. Dawn DeDeaux looks ahead towards a fascinating socially distanced future with her Space Clown series. \nFor more information please contact the Arthur Roger Gallery at 504.522.1999\, press@arthurrogergallery.com\, or visit our website at arthurrogergallery.com.

SUMMARY:Lin Emery: A Force of Nature
DESCRIPTION:The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present Lin Emery: A Force of Nature\, an exhibition of kinetic sculpture by Lin Emery. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger@434\, located at 434 Julia Street\, from February 2 – 23\, 2019. The gallery will host an opening reception with the artist in attendance on Saturday\, February 2 from 6 – 8 pm. \nLin Emery is best known for her wind-powered sculptures made from industrial-grade aluminum that she has welded and polished to reflect light. Emery’s sculptures composed of abstract forms are inspired by nature and powered by natural energy sources. Throughout her lengthy career\, Emery has investigated different methods of incorporating form with movement. Emery’s body of work includes the creation of aquamobiles (water)\, magnetmobiles (magnetic force)\, wind-powered works\, and even musical sculptures. Lin Emery has contributed much to the development of kinetic art. Yet\, she has never stopped to rest on her laurels. Responding to the changing world around her\, Emery continues to create compelling new sculptural forms\, and her work remains sought after for lofty museum collections and private homes as well as for major architectural commissions. Lin Emery’s nature-inspired kinetic sculptures are powered by natural forces. A force of nature herself\, Lin Emery is an artist to admire.

SUMMARY:Simon Gunning and the Southern Louisiana Landscape at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art
DESCRIPTION:October 1\, 2016 – February 5\, 2017 \nAustralian-born Simon Gunning left his native country in the 1970s with plans to attend a graduate program in England for painting. On his way\, he traveled through the United States and to New Orleans\, where he was captivated by the city’s urban landscape set amongst a lush backdrop of tropical flora and cypress swamps. Gunning moved to New Orleans in 1981 and began painting its neighborhood streets and later\, the natural scenery of South Louisiana. \nGunning’s paintings depict a range of local subject matter\, such as the Creole cottage-lined streets of the city’s historic neighborhoods\, passing barges on the Mississippi River\, and the serenity of two fishermen in the Honey Island Swamp. This exhibition will highlight Gunning’s mastery of the Southern Louisiana landscape\, which he has been painting for over thirty years.

SUMMARY:Driving Forces: Sculpture by Lin Emery at Georgia Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:October 01\, 2016 – April 02\, 2017 \nThis exhibition features kinetic sculptures by the internationally recognized New Orleans artist Lin Emery. Four large-scale sculptures\, made to move in the wind\, will be on view in the Jane and Harry Willson Sculpture Garden\, while smaller sculptures will be exhibited indoors. Executed in either polished or brushed aluminum\, the sculptures take their cue from music\, dance and natural forms\, especially flowers and trees\, both in their shapes and in how they respond to a passing breeze. Equal parts delicate and strong\, her sculptures also reflect her adopted home through her use of industrial materials\, such as polished marine aluminum\, which is often used for boat building in that port city.
