Ida Kohlmeyer - Slanted 96-3

Ida Kohlmeyer

The new Arthur Roger Gallery Project space at 730 Tchoupitoulas Street is presenting paintings and sculpture by Ida Kohlmeyer as its inaugural exhibit. This new 2100 square foot project space which was designed by architects Chrestia, Staub and Pierce, will present monthly exhibitions and installations in addition to the present gallery on Julia Street. The works in this exhibition by Ida Kohlmeyer include several marvelous grid paintings and metal sculptures created from 1983 through the time of her death in 1997 when she was still New Orleans’ most prominent artist.

Intended to commemorate Ida Kohlmeyer’s important place in the history of the Arthur Roger Gallery the exhibit was assembled over a period of two years and consists of virtually all the remaining distinctive grid format paintings and large and small scale boldly painted sculpture by the artist that are still available.  Many of the works are from the Gimpel-Fils Gallery which represented Ida Kohlmeyer in London as well as work from the Kohlmeyer estate. The exhibit movingly recalls Ida Kohlmeyer’s painterly freedom and abiding exuberance.
